The onslaught has ended, at least for now. We are horrified by what lies in the aftermath of the Israeli terror attacks on Gaza. The Gaza-based Palestinian Centre For Human Rights (PCHR) puts the death toll at 1,285, with nearly 70% of the dead civilian. 280 were children. 111 were women. Over 4,000 injured, many with life-long debilitating injuries, including over 1,000 children and over 700 women. The damage to the infrastructure of Gaza is beyond belief. 2,700 buildings damaged or destroyed.

Feb 6th Update: Call your Congressperson now to oppose House Congressional Resolution 29 (H. Con. Res 29) which questions support for the United Nations Relief Works Agency (UNRWA) and alleges its support for terror organizations.  H. Con. Res. 29 has been referred to the House Committee on Foreign Affairs. While the people of the Gaza Strip are suffering after years of occupation, blockade and weeks of war UNRWA deserves only steadfast American support and aid to alleviate the suffering in Gaza.  The attempts to make UNRWA's job harder and limit funding for the organization sends the message that the United States is actively seeking the continued deprivation of the Palestinian people.

It is likely that the Israel Lobby is now politically attacking the UNRWA to deflect criticism of Israel's attacks on UNRWA facilities in Gaza.

More coverage of the Gaza Crisis can be found at the Electronic Intifada and on Flashpoints.

In January the US Congress came to back Israel's actions, in a resolution written by AIPAC.

This is the bill as passed in the House. It is completely one-sided and does not recognize the great harm that Israel has and is doing to the Palestinian people. The final vote for the House bill, introduced by Nancy Pelosi,  was 390 voting yes, and only five voting No, with 22 Voting "Present" (see roll call here, we believe that even those voting Present, rather than Yes, showed at least some sanity, Please thank your representative if they voted No or Present). The Senate vote was by voice vote. AIPAC's work has paid off, so far.

Some voices of Dissent.

The most articulate and strongest voice for peace in Gaza has been that of Rep. Dennis Kucinich. He has called the Israeli actions possible war crimes and has initiated an investigation that Israel use of US provided weapons is in violation of the Arms Export Control Act, which would require that the US cease military exports to Israel.
